The middle Wye Valley is an undiscovered gem! This walk starts from a spectacular viewpoint above the river before descending through woodland to follow the riverbank, then turning inland to the village of Fownhope. Climbing out of the village to join the Wye Valley walk, the route goes through a mix of open fields and woodland with views east and west. Two nature reserves are crossed and just before the end, the route circles the massive hill-fort of Capler Camp. It is beautiful in spring with cowslips, orchids and bluebells as well as great views, birdlife and a choice of pubs halfway!

A lovely walk by the Wye. We had a very good lunch in the garden of The GreenMan inn which was very conveniently placed. The farm shop mentioned in a previous comment is no longer there. The part of the walk where you have to go through a gap in the hedge was a bit hard to find but the gap is just after the telegraph lines cross the hedge: a bit further than the walk details.

At WP 11, there is a well-signed slight change of route through the farmyard which differs from the instructions. Follow the clear signs that have been put up and you will soon connect with the instructions given in the walk. Also, there is now a Farm Shop - info here: http://allinadayswalk.co.uk/2012/12/16/fownhope-farm-shop/ in case people are interested in buying something. Finally - the New Inn at Fownhope was under significant refurbishment when we went (October 2013) so don't rely on this for a pub lunch for a while.

Did this walk 29/6/12. A good and interesting walk. No problems with navigation etc. Thanks JT

This looked a lovely walk but sadly we had to abandon as the stretch along the Wye had several stiles impassable for a large labrador.
