This exciting linear route begins at Carsluith Smokehouse, ascends a lane onto moorland to reach the long-abandoned Kirkmabreck Church, proceeds to the abandoned Fell Quarries and then climbs Knockeans Hill, with fine views over the Cree Estuary. A careful descent from the summit follows, with a more gentle descent via the Balloch Glen into Creetown and the option of refreshments at cafe or pub.

Buses ply regularly along the A75 between start and finish points.

The walk was offered as part of the 2010 Newton Stewart Walking Festival: see www.newtonstewartwalkfest.com

Information for Dog Owners: this is sheep country, so dogs should be kept on a leash.
