The walk starts in the centre of the beautiful Peak village of Castleton, famous for its unique Blue John Stone, which is mined nearby and sold in several of the village shops as jewellery. The walk climbs from the village, past Peak Cavern and up to the bottom of Winnatts Pass and Speedwell Cavern. The latter is accessed by boat and is well worth visiting.

From Speedwell the walk continues, slowly climbing around the contour of Treak Cliff towards Treak Cliff Cavern. From here, it climbs towards the base of Mam Tor and the Blue John Mine, where the stone of the same name is mined.

The walk then follows the National Trust path up to the summit of Mam Tor, a steep climb, but well worth the effort for the fantastic views of the valley of Castleton and Edale and the brooding flat-top plateau of Kinder.

From the summit, the path ahead is well-defined along the ridge and through Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill, all easily visible from the summit of Mam Tor. From Lose Hill it's all downhill, descending into the valley below and Castleton.

Did this walk today for the second time on a reasonable day weather wise. All in all a very good walk with decent directions apart from the way back to Castleton from Lose Hill. I noticed a comment that the directions are vague and I have to agree there. Basically as you descend Lose Hill at the bottom there is a stile you must cross which isn't mentioned in the directions. Just walk straight on cross the stile which is directly in front of you turn left and keep the trees on your right. Walk straight down in a Southerly direction eventually through a gate at Spring House Farm ( marked private road apart from walkers). Carry straight on looking out for a public footpath to your right- take this path and you will end up in Castleton. Could be better explained in the directions but as I said a very good walk and well worth doing .

Did this walk on 28/4/2021 It is a great walk but find the directions from WM 8 when we reached Lose Hill very vague. we descended the path but saw no signs for Lose Hill Farm or any other signs for that matter. We had no compass to follow SE Instructions. Consequently we ended up at Hope, which gave us a long walk back to Castleton. Please could you update directions if possible

Did this walk today with a small extension on the end after Lose Hill. 8.5 miles total and just under 3 hours. Stunning walk and pretty quiet pre 10am! Will definitely be exploring that area a bit more.

Best walk of our Peak District holiday. We didn't get lost but you might want to revisit the directions from Loose Hill Farm as I don't think we followed the correct route.

We did this walk during the bank holiday weekend. The views are spectacular and well worth the climb and we found the suggested timing very accurate. I suggest you allow some time to look around Castleton which has an excellent visitor centre.

We chose this as our first walk in the Peak District on our recent holiday and would thoroughly recommend it as the views are spectacular and inspiring. The climbs are well worth the effort as the sense of achievement when you arrive back in Castleton and look up to where you've been is immense. We took much longer than the suggested time though as we stopped to enjoy the views and take photos so would recommend you buy the all day ticket in the carpark.

Did this walk today 2/8/05 in just under 3 hrs with a stop for packed lunch. This is the 2nd time I have doen this and it did not seem as severe...that climb up Mam Tor is very exhilarating and worth it for the views. It was a clear day this time so I could see for miles and miles. Excellent walk 10/10.....

I used this walk as part of my training for the Macmillan Peru Inca Trail Challenge of 27 May 2005. However I included an extension to Win Hill and down to Ladybower reserviour before returning to Mam Tor. In all an 8 hour trip! Mark Devine
