This walk takes you up through typical alpine pastures from a small lake to the Col de Coux, where there are fantastic views to the Dents du Midi and Dents Blanche.
On the way, at the Chalets de Freterolle, you can stop for a drink or to buy cheeses. There is a fairly steep climb up to the col but you are rewarded with amazing views.
The way down is on the GR5, mostly through forest. As you descend, on the left Les Terres Maudites are extraordinary cliffs of buckled limestone, upended millennia ago when these mountains were formed. Their massive curved shape are testament to the enormous forces involved.
The last section takes you past the chalet at Chardonniere, where again you might want to stop for refreshments. Just a little further on is a picnic site by the river, or return to the Chalets des Mines d'Or, where yet another cafe-restaurant awaits you.
