From the attractive and historical large village of Charlbury, this walk takes country lanes, bridleways and footpaths in the most beautiful surroundings imaginable, to visit Finstock. The route circles the Cornbury Estate, on part of The Oxfordshire Way, and on the edge of Wychwood Forest for some distance, returning to Charlbury via the wonderful Cornbury Park.

One is always aware of the harmonious nature of the glorious handiwork of God and man in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the peace and tranquility that prevails. The woodland path through part of the Wychwood Forest is magical, with mature trees that give refuge to different bird species. Listen for the tap, tap of the woodpecker. Cornbury Park is gorgeous and spectacular with its wonderful array of majestic trees and the marvellous sight of the deer herd that roams freely.

All too soon Charlbury is in view again, but there is much fo tempt the visitor to tarry longer, with the appeal of attractive Cotswold buildings, including several old pubs and inns inviting the weary traveller to rest awhile.

Loved this walk. Did it in early August so dry apart from the woodland path at Step 8 which was very sticky. Pub at Finstock (Crown) has recently been closed and sold as a private dwelling, but there is still a post office/general store for drinks etc. The path and views from Steps 4 and 5 are not overrated in the slightest (fantastic area) and the return to Charlbury from as far out as Step 11 is superb. Had a post-walk drink at the Bull Inn in Charlbury; had a good feel to it.

I combined this walk with a trip to the nearby Cornbury Music Festival last weekend. The festival was disappointing but the walk was beautiful and really made up for it. I've never seen so many butterflies in my life and I guess the miles of unspoilt hedgerows and woodland are the ideal habitat for them. An impressive walk from start to finish. Charlbury itself is a great place to stop off for a drink with three decent pubs to choose from, one of them offering seven cask ales.
