Charlton Kings - Dowdeswell Wood - Lineover Wood - Wistley Hill - Charlton Kings

These days the River Chelt is a rather modest stream, but the valley it has carved through the Cotswold escarpment offers dramatic scenery and some splendid wildlife habitats. In this walk, we head up the northern side of the valley through open pastureland with fine views, then join the route of the Cotswold Way, heading south for a couple of kilometres. This takes us down past Dowdeswell Wood Nature Reserve, incorporating Dowdeswell Reservoir. Crossing to the south side of the valley, we climb up into the ancient Lineover Wood and eventually emerge on the top of the escarpment at Wistley Hill. Here the views across the Severn Valley are breathtaking, extending on a clear day to the Malvern Hills and the Black Mountains beyond. We complete the circuit descending through more woodland and along field-paths.

Some great views on this walk unfortunately the trees have grown in a number of places and the views have been reduced. Two steep climbs but worth it. WE went on a lovely sunny October afternoon. Not sure how muddy it would be in the middle of a wet winter. Actual walk distance 6.7 miles done in 3 hours

Did this again 04 June 2017. Found the correct route this time! No bench at waymark 11 but great view. Thanks Keith.

In view of Ros' comments (see below) I've extended the description of the route between waymarks 3 and 4, hopefully making the instructions clearer.

After Colgate farm, rerouted path was not clear. Could not get back to Cotswold way. I was walking beside it separated by barbed wire!Ended up climbing over a gate topped with barbed wire! Landed safely. The rest of the walk was splendid.
