From near the Roman lead-mining centre around the isolated Mendip hamlet of Charterhouse, this upland walk crosses Black Down with its immense views and returns via dry limestone valleys and a local nature reserve.

Great day for a great walk! Ros is right it is tricky to find the path left off the track 100 yds or so from the car parking area. It is a little overgrown this time of year but I hope our new photo and clarification in the notes will help from today. There was indeed a reedy pond and the instructions and map were spot on from then on.

9th August. Did not find a stile after the pond in 2. Ended up too far east on a main road. A lift got me to the track up hill to the wireless mast. it was a jungle! And it rained. I took a short cut from 5 to 9. It was through a bog!However, it was great once I was back on track. Worth it to see sheep WITH TAILS!! at Charterhouse farm, and the tranquil stroll along Velvet Bottom. Thanks Tony

There is now a small car parking area at the end of the lane and an information board. Superb views, I recommend the walk to all types of walker.

We did this walk on a lovely sunny day. Had a slight problem at the start as we walked too far around the reeded pond as the 'signpost' had disappeared. Back on track, it was wonderful, with fantastic views and the Bluebells were amazing as we descended into Velvet bottom. Can definitely recommend this one.

We did this walk on a rather dull day but still thought it was absolutely magical. Fantastic. Especially the second section in the valley. Thankyou Tony Brotherton! Two minor issues - the numbers in the text don't line up with the numbers on the map. Please please put these minor details right - we want to go back and do it again!

An enjoyable walk with great views. The climb from 12 to 13 late in the walk is very gentle, so unfit walkers like me don't get knocked out by a killer slope at the end!

This is great walk. It's quite varied, covering moorland, farmland, lanes and woodland. Instructions are easy to follow and very accurate. Will be doing this one again.
