The walk is is in four distinct parts: first, the Caldon Canal is followed to Deep Hayes Country Park. The second section is a walk through the park, very easy at first, but with some steep flights of steps towards the end.
There follow pastures with the usual mix of stiles and gates before a drop to a tea room in the old village school. The road leads through the older and very attractive part of Cheddleton to the A520, where a crossing is used to reach a final footpath that contours the hillside above the canal before dropping to The Boat Inn and the start of the walk.
