Cheshunt Field - Olivers Lane - Leas Lane - Gosbecks Archaeological Park - Cheshunt Field

Gosbecks Archaeological Park is a superb country park with a network of broad, mown grass paths covering at least a square kilometre. This walk, however leaves the bounds of the park then uses a stretch of quiet country lane and a series of bridleways before returning to the park and visiting the sites of a Roman temple and a theatre which, in its day, would have held 4-5,000 people! The ground plan of both is clearly visible in the turf and there are notice boards with excellent pictures and descriptions of them. Walk 7006 also offers the opportunity to visit both locations and we have included a photo of one of the noticeboards as the general picture for each.

The surrounding countryside through which you pass is very pleasant and you cross and recross the Roman River at three points along the way. Both this walk and walk 7006 offer, in addition, the opportunity to visit Colchester zoo, which has an excellent reputation. In both cases a short there-and-back diversion will be necessary to take advantage of this.
