Cheshunt Field - Stanway Green - Butcher's Wood - Olivers Lane - Gosbecks Archaeological Park

The great majority of this walk is on good bridleways, but there is a short section of quiet country lane and you cross a B road twice. We have included detail of the Roman theatre and temple in the write-up for Walk 7005 and the general photo for this walk has its companion here, as one shows the notice-board giving details of the temple and the other shows the theatre.

The Romans had a substantial settlement in the Colchester area for many years, until Boadicea championed the cause of the native Britons and drove them out. Colchester is in fact Britain's oldest recorded town.

A lovely family stroll trough bridleways and fields. A couple of updates are required, which are,at waymark 5 there is no signpost, you need to walk to the brow of the hill and the signpost is on the right beside 4 tall wooden posts. At waymark 7 when you pass through the hedge from the tarmac path, you follow a right-hand edge of a field, not a left-hand one as stated. Finally if you don't visit the zoo at waymark 4 the walk is only 3.4 miles,so needs to be changed in the main description where it states it's 4.4 miles.
