Chobham and Chobham Common

The walk starts from the car park in Chobham. It covers a mixture of farmland, woodland and open heath. It would be most advisable to carry a compass as the heathland part of the walk is criss-crossed with numerous footpaths, which makes it difficult to specify a particular path in the description. Note there is currently a diversion at Waymark 04 due to a locked gate at what appears to be a right of way. This adds about 1km to the walk.

In related downloads there is a gpx file with the actual track including the diversion. See also note in comments about this (September 2019).

Thank you to Patricia for reporting the locked gate. The ordnance survey map indicates that it is a right of way so I am not sure why it has been locked. The sign is very faded and is totally unreadable. There is a visible surrey logo but I have serious doubts about the authenticity of this sign, it is certainly very unprofessional. The local Rights of Way team tell me it is not their sign, but as it is a right of way but not a footpath they can do nothing about it. Instead of the way Patricia went, turn left along the main road towards Chobham. There is a safe tarmacked pavement. Turn right into Mincing Lane and there is a easily missable footpath immediately on the right. This takes you across to meet Chobham Park Lane some way north of WM04. I am in the process of updating the walk to take this detour into consideration.

We completed this walk today. You can now no longer go through the gate at WM 4. They have put a padlock on there is a local council notice from July of this year advising you of a diversion. The annoying thing is that the diversion means walking along the A 319 (ie turn right when you reach the A319) on a very narrow verge with one blind spot and then after about 200m or so, crossing over to go left down Old Chertsey Road and then after a very short distance turn left to take a very overgrown footpath to eventually come out 100 yards on the private road that you couldn't go down!!! I.e for a very short stretch of it you are unable to walk it.We were also grateful to have the app on our phone around WMs 14-15. An enjoyable walk though.

A really enjoyable walk. Please note (as in a previous comment) at point 4, you can walk down this road even though it is marked as 'private' and at point 5 there is another wooden gate just passed the brick wall which also suggests that you can't go through. It is a little intimidating, and although we weren't challenged, one resident did tell us that we couldn't go that way and it didn't lead to anywhere. This is clearly untrue and the road is a public right of way.Definitely worth it !

Lovely walk but would recommend walking boots if doing this in winter due to the very boggy and muddy conditions underfoot. Take care with the directions as its easy to go wrong if you're not careful, a GPS helped us today. When walking on the heath it is easy to go wrong but just keep left and you will be ok. Power lines were buzzing like crazy! when we walked this walk, but all in all quite nice and not too long. 8/10.
