Graham Wilson originated this route which was revised in March 2024 by Phil Catterall.
When walking country was moulded, the North York Moors was given more than its fair share of beauty - it has views, wooded valleys, babbling streams and is near the coast so there are fabulous sea views across a beautiful coastline.
This is a short circular walk taking in some of the best views, passing through some of our oldest woodlands. It uses tracks and bridleways, with only a short section on metalled roads. Some of the tracks are ancient byways between settlements, and still use worn Yorkshire stone flags (paving stones) as the surface. Other parts can be quite muddy though, so in wet weather, wear suitable footwear.
The route itself starts at the edge of Fylingthorpe village, which has a pub, shop and car parking. This walk traverses a disused railway line (also a Sustrans cycle route) to start with, before cutting across fields and farm tracks up into the local countryside. Highlights include the spectacular views across Robin Hoods Bay and the North Sea, old and knarled woodlands, Ramsdale Mill Water Wheel (private house) before passing by the old school boarding community of Fylingthorpe Old Hall before finally following in the footsteps of the ancients across the fields towards Fylingthorpe.
This is a short, slightly hilly but exceptionally rewarding walk for lovers of beautiful countryside.
