Although this looks like a peninsula on the map it is really a tombolo – an island connected to the mainland by sand-dunes.
This route wanders down one side of it, visits the cemetery of the Macleans of Boreray, ascends to the highest point which is marked by a trig point and then returns by the other shore. The area is criss-crossed by many little paths and the terrain is such that paths are largely unnecessary. The route described is simply the way I went rather than prescriptive instructions. Feel free to wander off it at will and invent your own walk – it’s impossible to get lost.
The area is rich in birdlife. My list included redshank, oystercatcher, lapwing, corn bunting, skylark, tern and eider duck.
