This is a wonderful walk at any time, with stunning views down and across beautiful Bilsdale and a panoramic view of Teeside and beyond. However, large tracts of this walk are through moorland smothered in heather and in early September a wonderful walk becomes absolutely stunning. The paths are generally good, with one or two slightly boggy parts after heavy rain.
The route starts with an energetic climb onto Urra Moor. Look back for a fine view of Hasty Bank and Cold Moor; the more distant view of Teesside and Roseberry Topping is a taster for a superb view later in the walk. You can now relax and enjoy the views down and across Bilsdale as you traverse a relatively level section along the ridge; note the Bilsdale TV transmitter in the distance. On leaving the ridge, there follows a pleasant, but occasionally stiff, descent through woodland and farmland into the small hamlet of Seave Green, where the parish church of St Hilda's is designated an Ancient Monument.
The profile of the second half of the walk is similar to the first, but with a different finish and yet more spectacular views. First, a small section through farmland is followed by a steady climb up onto Cold Moor, during which Hasty Bank majestically rises into view. There now follows another reasonably level ridge walk and more (different) splendid views left and right before finally rejoining the Cleveland Way. Pause here a while, open up the lunch box and enjoy stunning views across the whole of distant Teesside; pinpoint Roseberry Topping in the middle distance and get a close-up view of your final section of the walk, Hasty Bank, from where you can visually relive the whole of the splendid route you've just completed.
