This walk through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Shropshire Hills takes us through some outstanding woodland, including the area of Walcot Park where around forty ancient oak-trees are under the protection of the National Trust. It also takes us to the Iron Age fort on top of Sunnyhill called Bury Ditches. These are an outstanding example of Iron Age earthworks, possibly amongst the best in Britain, thought to be around 2,500 years old. Amazingly they were only rediscovered in 1976 when a storm blew down many trees, exposing the site. This is also a site where the increasingly rare Wood White butterfly has a good foothold. The walk starts close to a mere youngster of a castle at only 920 years old, in the town of Clun. A E Houseman described Clun as 'the quietest place under the sun' but it is in fact a lovely and bustling town.

This walk is excellent underfoot throughout and should be no problem in any weather.

Walked on 12 Sep 2017 on dry sunny-ish day with autumn colours just starting. Pleasant walk from Clun on a quiet road and forest tracks to Bury Hill summit. Reasonable views. Down through woodland onto long-ish farm track to follow path up and over Clunton Hill with pleasant views on descent. Return to Clun bit of a slog on muddy tracks with limited views in woodland.

Did this walk on 05/01/2013..absolute nightmare!..they are doing work in the forest and '''MOST''' of the walk has been turned into an absolute mud-bath with the heavy machinery they are using !!..so much so, that at the half way mark we backtracked and went back to the car...

Truly wonderful walk. Instructions still spot on as of 28/8/11.

What a wonderful walk this was! Stunning views from the Hill Fort and such a lot of different scenery covered in one walk made it a real pleasure. Directions were spot on and this will become a regular walk for me and my husband as we have fallen in love with the area.

Someone who completed this walk last weekend has informed me that the Crown Inn Clunton has re-opened. William Milne.

Unfortunatly the 'Friendly Crown Inn' Clunton is now closed. However, we had a lovely walk and bought food and drink in Clun.

An excellent walk that is well written. The view are fantastic with some great autumn colours (3/11/07). The pub was friendly as described. My one gripe is according to my gps track it was 18km (12mile) long.
