The route climbs from the Contin car park (30m) to Loch na Crann (150m), reaches its highest point of 216m, then descends steeply to Achterneed (40m) and is level from then on. Much of it is on a broad forest track with a good surface. Loch na Crann and the nearby Dubh Lochan are well clothed with waterlilies; and between Waypoints 12 and 13 the path goes through a wood of majestic spruces. A country road takes you from Achterneed to the A834, which is paved to Strathpeffer.

Please note that no parking is available in Achterneed. People driving to the end of this walk must park in Strathpeffer.

A note from Mr MacGregor at Achterneed Farm: Please note there is no parking at Achterneed. People who do so cause great inconvenience to the households and the farm in Achterneed. On many occasions we have been unable to get out of driveways and farming operations have had to stop. All parking for walks are at Strathpeffer. We would be most grateful if you would amend your maps acordingly as we have no wish to stop anyone enjoying the countryside but if parking continues to cause problems we shall have to consider having vehicles towed away.
