This walk was originally contributed by Michael Vingoe. Walkingworld is very grateful to Stephen Harris for taking over the upkeep, July 2021.
The walk begins in the suburbs of Croydon and in no time is high on the North Downs with views not only of open country ahead, but also of the central London skyline behind. The woods ahead are full of bluebells in spring and by the time you come across Chaldon Church with its extraordinary fresco, you could be in deepest Surrey. A stretch of the North Downs Way brings you back to Happy Valley with its wonderful summer meadows. In this SSSI you will come across typical downland flowers, orchids, grasses, the rare but locally common yellow rattle and many other wildflowers... and the badger setts are still to come!
