An easy to follow walk through eastern County Durham, passing through several former pit villages as well as a national nature reserve and three local nature reserves. The route comprises a little pavement-walking, fields, lanes and woods as well as two pleasant wooded valleys.
The walk starts from Coxhoe high street at the lowest point of the walk before pavements, fields and lanes take the walker alongside a large working limestone quarry up to the highest point of the walk. The route then descends into Cassop Vale Nature Reserve to emerge into the former mining village of Cassop, from where there are great views looking back up the vale to Durham City, dominated by the imposing cathedral. A descent through Littlewood Nature Reserve is followed by a very pleasant ramble through a meandering valley. From here the route rises through fields, passing a wind farm to enter the farmstead of Low Raisby. Field- and lane-walking then takes the walker through Kelloe, another former mining village, before a little lane- and woods-walking delivers the walker back into Coxhoe.
