Cromford - Starkholmes - Old Matlock - Upperwood

From Cromford the route passes the historic Cromford Mill, over the Cromford Bridge with the Derwent below. Then, a little road-walking takes us to the farm track that winds its way up to the path through woodland, until we arrive at a small piece of bare ridge, where lovely views downward to Matlock Bath can be had. Behind will be seen Riber Castle. The route then descends steeply down to Starkholmes and along an ancient path to the River Derwent, where a pleasant stroll is had along the banks to Old Matlock. Returning along the A6, we turn up a steep lane that gives fine views again down to Matlock Bath, also passing the unique church of St John. The paths then are in thick woodland, a welcome relief from the hot sun on a good summer's day. Finally we come out onto Scarthin Lane and back to the car at Cromford.

What a fabulous walk! We completed this walk on a dank wet winters day but still loved it. Lots of time off the lead for our two dogs and wonderful variety and contrast between woodland moorland and urban with a rich historic heritage. We are relatively local so we will be coming back on a clear day to enjoy the views and also post covid to sample one of the many watering holes en route. Our favorite watering hole is and has been for many years the boat at Cromford at point 1 where soggy dogs and muddy boots are always welcome. We thought it was more like 7 miles and 3 to 3.5 hours but definitely in the correct category.

We completed this walk Saturday 16/05/2015 and thoroughly enjoyed it, views to take your breath away, if you have any left.. There are a few really steep climbs here some have hand rails and steps which you may need more than once, half way round and you are in the park in Matlock town, Great, will do again, recommended!! There is a short cut on the return leg which your map will show cuts out a long step climb back up through the woods adjacent to Gullivers kingdom.

We did the first half of this walk in Aug 2007, and enjoyed it very much. For those in need of refreshment, there's a good pub across the road from waymark 13.
