Leaving the bustling village of Crowcombe, we immediately climb through open fileds to the crest of the ridge and open heath. We then follow this for a short distance before dropping down Rams Combe, skirt Great Wood and have a brief encounter with a school and farmland, before returning to the heights via Cockercombe. An ancient drove road, now associated with Macmillan Nursing Care, is joined at the tiny but greatly significant landmark of Triscombe Stone. Wills Neck is taken in our stride, though the descent described is not for the faint-hearted! Throughout, the distinctive sound of the steam trains on the West Somerset Line compete for our attention with deer, birds of prey and, especially in spring, a profusion of flowers.
