The walk starts from the small car park located just north of the A628 at Crowden. Leave the car park by the northern exit and follow the wide track that heads north to the ford marked on the OS 1:25000 map. There is no path on this next section and the route follows Crowden Little Brook upstream. Except after heavy rain it is easy to cross the stream and it is suggested you follow whichever side you find easiest to reach the sheepfolds (Waymark 5).

This section of the walk is a delight, with small waterfalls and a feeling of wilderness. Although not marked on maps, the path continues up to the ridge.
Recent improvements including paved paths have made the often inaccessible OS trig point on Black Hill much easier to reach! It used to be in the middle of a large area of black liquid peat and finding a dry route was a great challenge, although from this side there is still a fair amount of peat to cross.

The summit of Black Hill is too broad to provide great views; leave the summit on the paved path that forms the Pennine Way to speed onward progress back to Crowden.

Once past Laddow Rocks, the path needs little description as it descends towards Crowden and the end of the walk.

Completed this walk 17th Feb. 2014. Climbing Crowden Little Brook was a real challenge on par with Birchin Clough (Crowden Little Brook is anything but little). The trek across Tooleyshaw moor was done in a heavy mist so had use my compass to guide me to Black Hill trig point. the journey back to Crowden along the Pennine Way was relatively straight forward. I really enjoyed this walk, directions and map were spot on. I even managed to find the wreck of the BEA Douglas DC-3

Have just returned from this walk (Sep 2011). Could manage very little of it as there wasn't a path along the stream at all (past waymarker 3 and 4) - tried crossing the stream about 7 times on either side of it. Ultimately climbed the hill on the left - very uneven and boggy terrain - lucky to escape without a broken ankle. This is the first time a WalkingWorld walk was so disappointing - what did we do wrong?

Just finished this walk. The walk up Crowden little brook on a cold day with a covering of snow and frozen water falls is stunning. On a wet day this could be hard going.
