The Culbin Forest (formerly known as the Culbin Sands) extends for 14km along the Moray coast. The area was farmed but was covered with sand during raging storms at the end of the 17th Century, the dunes being blown further inland by later storms. The Forestry Commission planted the pines to fix them and the area is now a SSSI, with a great variety of birds, flora and fauna. Information is given about these along the walks. Because of the sandy soil the trees are well-spaced, so it's possible to see well into the woods from the paths.
