This walk is mainly in the spectacular Stowe Park, a great natural landscape which was first begun in about 1700. Starting from the nearby village of Dadford, the route soon takes a bridleway track to enter the parkland, with huge sweeps of pastureland and intermittent buildings of a most unusual nature that unexpectedly appear in view.
Capability Brown had a hand in the design of the gardens and landscaping as they are today, beginning his career at Stowe as a gardener in 1741. Ownership of the gardens and part of the park passed to Stowe School from 1923 - 1989, following a period of great difficulties with no further innovations from 1846 when the Cobham family, the owners for many years, suffered a financial crisis.
Stowe School did much to protect and maintain the garden's temples, but the enormous costs proved too much, resulting in all but the school and mansion being gifted to the National Trust. It is a privilege to be free to enjoy this superb area that is the result of foresight and planning and love of natural beauty by various individuals through the ages.
The attractive village of Chackmore is visited, with its typical dwellings of Buckinghamshire architecture, before the final leg in this glorious parkland to reach the village of Dadford again.
