This is a very good, easy walk with just one stile (the first part has none, just flat walking across fields, lanes and by the river), with rural views. Along the way you can see Middlewood Hall, an historic mansion now divided into houses, its outbuildings and farm, and the castellated lodge house.
You pass Houghton Main Colliery, now reclaimed by nature, which operated from 1873 to 1993 and was the main employer for men and boys from Darfield.
You pass Dearne Valley Colliery, which was a surface drift mine, opened in 1901. The water pumped out was used by the water board for Darfield and area!
