The walk is based on the Visitor Centre near the Tockholes Plantations, where there are toilets, café, parking, a pub and a bus stop. The route follows a well-made path to Darwen Tower before returning by more usual moorland paths at 390m / 1300'. Gravelled tracks are then followed downhill to a road which is crossed into Tockholes Plantation, where the ruins of Hollinshead Hall are passed. From here an old coach road is followed. The first part has very recently been re-made with a gravelled surface but soon the old cobbled highway is reached and this follows the River Roddlesworth until, just before it enters a reservoir, it is left for a final pull up to the start of the walk. As this is a figure-of-eight walk it can be shortened.
