Deep Hayes - Tompkin - Stanley - Cauldon Canal - Deep Hayes

This is a scenic walk in the North Staffordshire countryside starting from Deep Hayes Country park near the market town of Leek. A gentle start takes you past a series of pools that used to be a large reservoir, then out into open countryside with views opening up as you ascend out of the valley. The next objective, Stanley Pool, is soon glimpsed in the distance after passing through the tiny hamlet of Tompkin. The tranquil waters of Stanley Pool were built to feed the Caldon Canal. This canal is followed on the last leg back to the start, which includes a canalside pub. Altogether a varied and not too taxing walk in charming countryside; note parts of this walk can be muddy after rain.

A very nice walk with only a few steady climbs, great views. The only thing that spoilt this walk was the severity of mud under foot,at some places it was at least a foot deep. At waymark 11 after climbing the stile it was unpassable due to the mud, we had to go into an adjacent field and work our way round to the gate next to the holly bush. One pointer to look out for is at waymark 3,the steps pictured is found 50 yards further along the route. The actual steps you require at the junction of paths have a stile 3 steps up to climb over.. GPS reading came out as 7 miles.
