This is a great little walk through a little visited part of Leicestershire with a long history. The walk starts along a quiet country greenway and visits Desford with it's historical links to the UK aircraft industry before passing a bird sanctuary (worth a visit afterwards), then it visits a medieval moated site, evidence that this part of Leicestershire was once covered in Deer Parks and was home to the affluent at play. Then passes through Newbold Verdon an old village with links to the Leicestershires nearly vanished mining heritage, past another medieval moat site now damaged and off limits due to quarrying. Great countryside and enough to keep you interested

The walk traverses footpaths on agriculture land which may have been ploughed so will be muddy after rain, wellies will be needed in this case

Frank makes a good point, the walk can easily be started in Desford, the choice of the walk start point was simply down to it being the closest point to Earl Shilton where we live...or lived to be more accurate

An excellent walk. Thanks, Richard. Parking was not easy at the start. It might be better to park in Desford. On the day I went through there were plenty of parking spaces, by the Co-op in Kirkby Rd, as suggested, or further down Kirkby Rd by the sports ground.

This walk is mostly across open fields and footpaths where dogs can happily be let off lead. There is some on-lead walking through Desford and Newbold Verdon. There are however quite a lot of stiles, Blue our "combat" collie loves them but Robbie our other collie hasn't worked them out yet so a bit of lifting was involved, so be prepared.
