An easy to follow walk around Derwentside that explores the rolling hills in this most northern part of County Durham. The route, starting and ending in the loftily sited Dipton, includes a nice variety of terrain in the form of fields, woods, lanes and an absolutely delightful railway path.
From Dipton the route descends on a great walk through Strothers Wood, then rises out of the wood to level off at Southfield Farm. Lane-, wood- and field-walking then intersects the stunning Derwent Walk, a former railway path. A pleasant but relatively brief walk along the railway path includes the crossing of a couple of viaducts. The route then changes direction for pleasant lane-walking past Lintz Hall, before the lane starts to rise quite steeply then levels off at Upper Lintz Farm. From here the route follows the contour of the hill as it passes through a series of fields with panoramic views, before finally changing direction once again and heading uphill to arrive back into Dipton.
