Dodd Wood under Ullock Pike

You commence this walk from the car park at Mirehouse. There are toilet, tea and tourist facilities at the stone building at the far end of the car park. The walk takes you past many nature trail signposts and over a weir. A gently ascending path leads you to junctions with forest tracks and through Dodd Wood itself. The wood in places is imposing and can be eerie if you are a lone walker. Sounds are echoed and the path underfoot is soft with pine needles which crunch at every step.

As you continue to ascend gently you will notice the vegetation around becoming less dense and teasing you with intermittent views over the lake. Very quickly, you emerge from the wood and onto the foothills of Ullock Pike. To your left is the striking Bassenthwaite Lake and to your right, the summit of Skiddaw. Continuing onwards, the path begins to descend, ultimately to the A591. A short section of road-walking reveals another path, heading towards the shore of the lake through fields and over stiles. The route takes you back to another section of the A591, which is again crossed. A forest path now follows above the line of the main road and leads to a lay-by and a tarmacked track up to the car park building from whence you came.
