This walk around the southern foothills of the Mendips is mostly along paths and quiet lanes, taking in the hill-fort at Masbury (see Walks 1544 and 2029 for the other large Mendip hill-fort at Dolebury), with great views across the Somerset Levels. It descends into the old coalfield near Nettlebridge, now pleasant rolling hills and woods. Harridge Wood Nature Reserve is beautiful, with valleys and a bubbling brook, but look for signs of old industry with remains of leats and millponds. Continue back over the woodland at Beacon Hill along the Fosse Way Roman road.
