Begin this lovely return walk from the now closed 'Tunnel Top' pub above the Preston Brook Tunnel, (photo on the right). This is an ideal walk to enjoy and includes parts of two long distance trails. Stroll down the lane to the southern end of the tunnel and the canal tow path; part of the 'Cheshire Ring Canal Walk' and watch boats passing through the lock and tunnel. Have a chat with the boaters before walking further along the towpath beside the Longacre Wood - (and as it belongs to the Woodland Trust it has footpaths - if you have the time explore it for a while) there are more details in Additional Info below. Following The route of this walk then takes you along some peaceful bridle paths, before following the 'Delamere Way' as it winds a fantastic route through woods and over a brook, then back to the towpath and returns you to the old pub. This walk includes instructions for walkers from moored canal boats.
The walk is suitable for children, teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies due to stiles and narrow paths. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled, but boots will be best in winter, or if there has recently been heavy rain, as the paths could be muddy. There should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. There is a tea room at the beginning of section seven which will be of special interest to gardeners. There are no picnic tables, but there is one bench seat on the towpath.
