This route starts near to Accrington and Rossendale College. It drops down to pass alongside a reservoir before climbing up towards the A56 Accrington Bypass using footpaths and rural lanes. It goes under the bypass before continuing the climb across fields and along an ancient highway to reach the highest point of the walk. From there it continues along the highway before crossing fields to reach the bypass again. This is the section with most of the stiles.
After going under the bypass for the second time the walk continues through a country park, passing a trig point and a monument. The final stretch is through some woodland and down a lane before crossing back to the start point using an enclosed path. The climb is over 3.5 kilometres with a total height gain of over 150 metres.
Diversion avoiding stone stile and squeeze-stile: at Waymark 07 turn left and follow the track (Plantation Road) past a farm with a turret (New High Riley). Continue down the track, passing an abandoned stables (May 2022) to reach a wide path on the right. Turn right and follow the path uphill, initially through the trees, then around a left-hand bend to reach Waymark 18. Continue the walk from this point. This reduces the walk to approximately six kilometres.
