This is a pleasant up and down walk from Ebchester in the Derwent Valley to the lofty village of Hedley on the Hill overlooking the Tyne Valley. The return leg back down to Ebchester travels all of the way through a long series of interesting connecting woods. The route passes through the three most northern counties of North East England in the shape of County Durham, Tyne & Wear and finally Northumberland.
Starting from Ebchester, the walk initially travels along a scenic part of the Derwent Walk, with good views looking north. The route leaves the railway walk and passes through Hamsterley Village to cross the River Derwent and start the long pull up through the fields past a huge quarry to arrive at the village of Hedley on the Hill. After a short length of road-walking the return route follows the line of a snaking series of woods that leads back down from the ridge to intersect and cross the River Derwent and return to Ebchester.
There are several parts of the walk that can get pretty muddy during the winter months. I would highly recommend you keep it for a summer's day when the ground is firmer.
