This walk starts from the historic Cotswold village of Elkstone. After passing the Norman church with its unusual Romanesque carvings, we reach a peaceful and attractive area of grassy hills and valleys, punctuated by strips of woodland. This area is excellent for wildlife, including birds, hare and fallow deer.
The walk continues up one of the valleys to reach a higher area with wonderful distant views over the rolling hills which can make an excellent picnic stop. From here we go downhill into a long valley and walk along a 'no through road' through quiet, attractive countryside to reach an excellent country pub at Cockleford, which can make a convenient lunch stop.
The return route goes through woodland, passing a small lake before climbing up through the wood to fields where there are more superb views. This area is good for wildflowers and butterflies in summer. A short walk along a quiet lane and then along village footpaths leads back to the church at Elkstone.
