This is circular walk in Stanney Woods Country Park; the short zig-zag route explores the woods and seeks out the wildlife and woodland flowers. This nature reserve is at Whitby Heath on the southern edge of Ellesmere Port. It has several wide and even paths with no gradients greater than 1:10. (The photo shows the start of the main path). The walk sections are close together and the surface of the paths is firm and compact, but due to the woodland nature of the site it may be softer in the winter months. This is excellent ancient woodland of oak and silver birch, with some hazel and holly. It is also an excellent site for bird watching and exceptionally good for fungi in the autumn. There are several entry and exit points from adjacent good housing estates, and you can deviate from the route proposed here from within the woodland at any point and explore without getting lost.
Suitable footwear for this walk will be anything flat soled. The walk is suitable for children, teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. It is also dog friendly and suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. There are no toilets or refreshments on site, nor any picnic table or bench seats. However, the Cheshire Oaks Shopping Outlet is nearby with a full range of facilities. Don't rely on maps or other guides to find your way as some paths have been discontinued and others are new and none of the narrow paths are marked at all. The standard map is hard to follow, so in the 'Related downloads' section of this walk you will find a jpg file of an enlarged map of the track with waymark locations.
