Following the course of the River Cherwell through much of this walk, the route visits the edge of two quiet waterside villages of Shipton-on-Cherwell and Thrupp, before veering away to the two charming and isolated hamlets of Hampton Poyle and Hampton Gay. Both have picturesque, delightful little churches standing in lonely country locations, cared for and used. The route, peaceful and rural, takes in wonderful countryside, wide open meadows, pastureland and floodplains, plus soothing waterside environment.

Sadly the railway crossing at step 15 has now been fenced off. There is a culvert under the railway about 50yds to the left, but the gates have been padlocked to deter anyone crossing.
