Ewyas Harold - Callowside - Elm Bridge - Pontrilas - Ewyas Harold

The Golden Valley is an area of rolling hills and peaceful farmland. It gets its name from the River Dore which runs through it. Local people confused the Welsh for water, 'dwr' with the French for gold, 'd'or', hence the Golden Valley. Walks 4603 and 4604 start from Ewyas Harold, while Walks 4602 and 4605 start from the 'capital' of the Golden Valley, Peterchurch. Walk 4601 starts from Dorstone. On Walk 4604 we explore the area near Ewyas Harold and Pontrilas. The area around Ewyas Harold is rural and peaceful. Although this walk avoids the main street through the village, it gives an idea of the area. The climb up to the church is rewarded by the view. Return is via Pontrilas, once a busy town but with the coming of the bypass, peace has returned.

At Waypoint 3 it is necessary to turn right through the gate (no longer a stile)once having crossed the footbridge and then turn left immediately and go up the field with the hedge to your left. Doing this keeps you on the official footpath and you get to the gate and footpath sign at the top directly. The field with the path 12' from the hedge has a new owner who does not want this path used (it is marked at the other end as not being a right of way). Walk done today 12/12/2013 and this bit of the route discussed with a local who was passing.
