A mixed landscape walk of four-and-a-bit ascents adding up to over 1200m, with clear paths (mostly) and no-one else in sight. More than anywhere else in Brecon, this mixed circuit reminded me of parts of the Central Highlands (with cattle replacing the deer).

Highlights are constantly changing views across the valley eastwards to the Pen-y-Fan ridge, north to Brecon, south and south-east to the 'Valleys' and north-east to the farmland beyond the River Usk. There's a feeling of soaring crags above and sweeping valleys below as you continue round the circuit - a walk worth getting out of the car for!

Magnificent 'real mountain' views avoiding crowded Pen-y-Fan on the eastern side of the A470; sheltered valleys with lively streams and wooded stretches offer pleasant resting places as a constrast to the crags and rolling tops above.

Navigation is easy on a clear day and with adequate map and compass skills, should still be little trouble in poor visibility; most paths are clear and junctions are at obvious features.

Really good walk done on an overcast day at end of March 2012.

Thanks for this Roger, however we are slightly baffled as this route goes a long way from the grid reference mentioned. No doubt a very nice walk, but it's not the same one.

It makes more sense to go from point 6 and follow the fence to pick up Beacons Way at 960221. The Way is not shown on earlier 1:50,000 maps. When I did this walk in August this section was very wet however.
