A flat coastal walk around the nature reserve on Farlington Marshes. This Site of Special Scientific Interest is just a stone's-throw away from busy Portsmouth, but is a peaceful haven for many rare species of birds, plants and butterflies. There are some excellent views across the reedbeds and towards Portsmouth, Hayling Island and the South Downs. This was a very important area during the Second World War and there is much fascinating history about this, as well as earlier oyster farming. If you are lucky you may find some fossils too! There are no stiles to negotiate, dogs are welcome but must be kept on the lead.

This is one of my favourite spaces to wander which I frequent many times a year. It is a wonderfully therapeutic and tranquil place to absorb the beautiful surroundings, sea scapes, fauna and flora. The free car park is adjacent to the hectic and noisy A27 yet you don't have to walk very far from the hustle and bustle of the main road before you step into a world of complete contrast, with many a keen "birder", angler and walkers enjoying this unique, tranquil place. Highly recommended for an afternoon or evening stroll as the sun melts into the west and the light dances amidst the tide line and the marshes. BLISS

Did this walk with my family last weekend. It was beautiful. It was VERY cold along the coast, so wrap up warm in winter, but well worth it. If you take binoculaurs you'll be repaid for all your efforts.
