The walk goes from central Freshfield to the station and then along Fisherman's Path, but before reaching the coast it turns south along a re-routed section of the Sefton Coastal Path. The path here is through pinewoods and over sand dunes marked on the OS map as 'Formby Hills', but they are really quite modest and bring you to the National Trust caravan office on the road to their car park, Here you turn inland to Freshfield station and follow the outward route back to the start. In happier times the walk may be started from the station or the NT car park.
