Ainsdale sand-dunes and the adjoining pine forests at Formby are a fantastic area to explore. The area is great for family picnics among the dunes, as well as paddling in the shallow water by the sea. For the nature lover, there is a wealth of great wildlife to see including many wildflowers unique to the sand-dunes, red squirrel at the National Trust reserve at Formby and the rare natterjack toads in the pools. Walking is easy, as there are no hills and as it is mainly on sand, there is no chance of mud. The walk is also close by the famous Trans Pennine Trail cycle route, which runs from Southport all the way to Hornsea on the east coast.
