This easy walk starts from the car park of a shopping centre in Freshfield, but a shorter version could begin at either Freshfield or Ainsdale Station. It uses urban footpaths where possible to reach Freshfield Station, from which woodland paths lead to Ainsdale Station. A train is taken back to Freshfield Station and the outward route is mostly used back to the start. The advantage of using the car park is that parking is limited at the stations but is easy to find by the shops, where there is an excellent coffee shop in Spar and a pub directly opposite. The woodland path is well-used and very attractive, making a pleasant half-day or evening walk.
