Dog Friendly Pub walk; this circular hill walk makes use of well-worn paths through attractive and steeply sloped mixed woodland. There are good occasional views across the Mersey estuary and a panoramic view can be enjoyed from the monument at the top. The route includes a section of the famous Sandstone Trail which will take you through the wooded hillside along the crest of the hill. Although well used this Trail is very rough, uneven, and undulating, so you need to have a fair bit of agility. In winter or after heavy rain it will be boggy in places too.
The return route begins by bringing you down to the bottom of the hill, followed by a much easier long path through the woods along the foot. The pub is near the end of the walk so it's a good place to fortify yourself, ready for your final climb up the hill back to the finish at the car park. There are no fields to cross so you won't meet any farm animals or crops, and no gates or stiles to navigate either.
This walk is suitable for older teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs and buggies. Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled, but boots will be best; and after heavy rain and in winter they will be essential. There should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts in summer. On your route there are no facilities except those at the pub at the start and finish. If you book in advance you should be able to get a good meal with your pint and water for your dog; an excellent finish to a good walk.
