Madeira is a very popular destination for cruise ships and never more so than at New Year for the incomparable firework display. There is nowhere better to stretch your legs with some wonderful walking through a landscape of mountains and valleys with outstanding views. The water resources are managed through a system of channels or levadas and these have paths beside them, making a huge variety of routes possible. The walk recommended here is a treat for all the senses, with great views enjoyed while walking through air scented with mimosa and eucalyptus to the accompaniment of rushing water and birdsong, while not forgetting the lovely cakes at the tea garden passed en route.

This superb route offers a variety of types of walking, with both a path into a plunging valley and one beside a levada. It starts from Monte, just above the cruise port and capital of Funchal and easily reached by bus or cable-car. Monte is a picturesque spot and famous as the push-off point of the downhill sled ride.

The first third is a lovely woodland walk that plunges into a deep valley, then climbs again to Romeiros. There the route picks up the Levada dos Tornos and the walking is now completely level and very easy, following the water channel round the hillside more or less on the 600m contour, passing a welcome tea garden. A short bus ride then takes you back to Funchal.

Due to a large fire going downhill into Funchal in 2017 followed by large landslides, a lot of the route was destroyed, a high percentage has been rebuilt except the route over the bridge at point 5. This is under repair but no date as of yet.

23/02/2016 We took the number 48 bus from the Four Views Monumental Hotel to Monte. This passes Reid's Hotel but does not go into the centre of Funchal. This is an excellent walk. The instructions are easy to follow. Recommend stopping at the Jasmin Tea House. At the end of the walk there was a taxi waiting for business - it cost us 10 euros back to Funchal. You can extend your day out by visiting the Palheiro Gardens which you will find lower down the road then catch the 36 or 37 bus back to Funchal.

Excellent walk. Many walkers were doing it the opposite way, i.e. towards Monte. When we reached the main road at the end of the levada there was a taxi waiting, probably having dropped some of those walkers. He happily agreed a price for taking us back to Funchal.

Note that the Hortensia Tea Gardens are closed on Sundays & the Jasmin Tea House is closed on Mondays. As we walked on a Sunday- I can recommend the Jasmin Tea House for tea & home made sandwiches.

Lovely walk with excellent and accurate instructions. The first section involves walking down and then uphill, but the rest is flat and easy. A really beautiful and memorable walk.
