Stage 9 of the GR11 is the first truly alpine stage and is a magnificent day's walk. Though not long, it includes a major ascent to Peña Ezcaurri (2,047m) and the final climb to the summit and subsequent descent could be dangerous in poor visibility or wet conditions. It should not be attempted at all without appropriate equipment if there is a chance of ice or snow. There is a lower alternative (see Walk 3128) if you don't fancy the climb, or in inclement weather. The Walk 3127 route starts from the little town of Isaba, heading north-east along the Belabarce River. You soon turn south, climbing through the woods to emerge on a long easterly ridge that is followed before making a south-westerly approach to Peña Ezcaurri, over a double col leading to the glacial lake Ibón de Ezcaurri. The way to the top is via a very steep gully behind the lake, followed by an equally steep and rough scramble up the final pitch. The way down is also very steep and rocky, but soon arrives at the Collado Arguibieta, where you contour around the final obstacle before dropping down to the road and a short walk to the campsite at Zuriza, where the stage ends.
