This short but relatively demanding linear walk follows the spectacular rocky coastline between Galé and Albufeira.

Follow sandy trails and stony footpaths, passing through rock gullies and above sandy coves. The natural landscape and rock formations are quite breathtaking and there are beaches galore for those who like to combine their warm weather hiking with a cool dip in the ocean (this is the Atlantic, remember!)

Despite the popularity of Blue Flag beaches like Evaristo, Coelha, São Rafael and Arrifes, this coastal route west of Albufeira is mostly untouched by mass tourism.

Keep your eyes peeled for anglers perched high above the cliffs and for local people gathering shellfish at low tide. Observe the skills of the boatmen as they steer their crafts close to the cliffs so that passengers can observe the rock formations and birdlife close up.

There are opportunities briefly to escape the heat of the Algarve sunshine when your route takes you through towering bamboos and glades of stone-pine trees.

Towards the end of the walk, there are superb distant views towards the red cliffs of Praia da Falésia (ranked 12th in the world in TripAdvisor's 2018 Travelers' Choice), Quarteira and the hills beyond.

When you near Albufeira, the route leaves the coast and heads downhill towards the resort's colourful marina with its rows of bars, restaurants and shops. This is where you'll find the boat trips for caves and dolphins (booking is advised).

Although the instructions are for a linear route, the energetic might choose to retrace their steps for a return route along the coast.
