The walk is based upon Gargrave, although it can just as easily be done from the halfway point, the Cross Keys Inn at East Marton on the A59. The first two miles of the walk follow the Pennine Way in a south-westerly direction across pastures. The second half is partly on tracks and lanes and partly on the towpath of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal, so that there is quite of lot of variety. Nowhere are there any sustained steep climbs, just enough to give some lovely views of the surrounding Pennines.
