This circular walk heads north via tracks and fields from the little port of Garlieston, once a stop on the Glasgow - Liverpool shipping route, diverts to the ruinous Kirkmadrine, joins a pleasant lane and returns along the coastal path, with occasional prospects across the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea. There are good views of some of the Galloway hills.

Halfway round is a beach shelter, a good spot for lunch. Later on, the walk passes the remains of a promontory fort.

The walk could be combined with Walk 890, visiting Cruggleton Castle and Galloway House Gardens, to provide a varied, all-day, ten- or thirteen-mile outing.
