Gatehouse of Fleet – Barlay Glen – Glencap Forest – Dow Craig Hill – Trostrie – Carse – Gatehouse of Fleet

This mainly moorland walk is the epitome of Glorious Galloway – wonderfully wide open and with vast views. Starting from the car park in beautiful Cally Woods, you take a rising farm drive to enter the Forestry Commission Scotland's Disdow and Benjarg Woods, proceeding up the Barlay Glen and into Glencap Forest, through which you walk entirely in the open along the forest road. You continue on the road across open moorland, skirting Fore Hill of Glengap to drop down beside Dow Craig and into Glengap, roughly the halfway point of your walk. The road descends to Trostrie and lower down you turn off to pass Carse and return along the course of the Old Military Road across the moors, with views to the Solway and if clear, the Isle of Man. You return via Robbers' Gate into Cally Woods and your start point.

On this walk all inclines and declines are gentle and you will need to negotiate a maximum of three stiles and half-a-dozen field-gates.
