Walk starts outside Potters Wood car park and briefly follows Gathurst Road past possible refreshment opportunity to take path through Potters Wood beside the brook and over the rail track to cross River Douglas in order to join Leeds - Liverpool Canal. The towpath section leads to Gathurst rail station with its friendly bar before passing under the impressive M6 viaduct to Dean Brook. Having crossed Dean Brook the route climbs, with good views east over Winter Hill to Bank Top, which offers more refreshments. From Bank Top the walk heads down back to Dean Brook Valley, which it follows towards Upholland before passing under the M6 for a second time and back to the start.
